Midwest Alternative Fuel Spending May Eclipse That Of Power Industry

The region has 102 projects in the alternative fuels sector worth over $11 billion planned for 2007.

According to research from Industrial Info Resources, the alternative fuels sector in the Midwest region has 102 projects on tap worth more than $11 billion planned for construction in 2007, though many of those projects may be delayed or canceled for market or financial reasons.

In total, the Midwest region has $35 billion in projects scheduled for construction in 2007. The area’s dominant industrial market in terms of spending, the power industry, may be eclipsed by alternative fuels this year, the report said.

For the region, Iowa will see the most activity, with 23 percent of planned project spending. Iowa has 131 projects worth more than $8 billion scheduled for 2007. More than 50 percent of those projects are in the alternative fuels sector. Forty percent are planned in the power sector, according to the report.
