4K TV: The Resolution Revolution

A look at the number of global shipments and market penetration of 4K TV from 2013 to 2016.

Gone are the days where you could show off your ‘Full HD’ sticker to your friends and family. The battle for living room superiority is now all about 4K.

Since its breakthrough onto the shelves, the number of global 4K shipments has risen dramatically. From 900 thousand, sold presumably mainly to hardcore TV enthusiasts in 2013, to a projected 48.1 million in 2016, the market penetration of Ultra HD TVs is expected to break past 20 percent this year.

But just as 4K is hitting its stride, there are of course other pretenders to the TV throne with 8K already being heralded by some as the ‘next big thing’. And with the unending desire for improvement in all things tech, it would seem foolish to bet against 4K being one day usurped by its bigger brother.

This chart shows the number of global shipments and market penetration of 4K TV from 2013 to 2016.
