COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — DuPont has settled the second of two test cases that had potential to influence thousands of similar lawsuits about the chemical company's discharging of C8 into the Ohio River and drinking water.
The Columbus Dispatch reports the case involved a 55-year-old West Virginia man who alleged that water tainted by C8 led to him contracting ulcerative colitis. The parties involved didn't disclose details of the settlement.
It came months after jurors in the first case awarded $1.6 million to a 60-year-old Guysville, Ohio, woman who said she got cancer after drinking contaminated water from a DuPont plant near Parkersburg, West Virginia. A federal judge in Columbus this week refused to grant a retrial.
Delaware-based DuPont maintained C8 didn't contribute to her cancer. It's expected to appeal the decision.
