Toyota Sales Rise 42 Percent

Automaker says its U.S. sales jumped 42 percent last month, making up for ground lost last year from a series of safety recalls.

DETROIT (AP) -- Toyota Motor Corp. says its U.S. sales jumped 42 percent last month, making up for ground lost last year from a series of safety recalls.

The company's sales plummeted last February after Toyota halted the sales of certain models until they were repaired. This year Toyota saw substantial gains, including a 44 percent increase in car sales and a 39 percent increase in truck sales.

Toyota's U.S. sales manager Bob Carter said Toyota's "Number One for a Reason" campaign in the last week of February helped boost sales even as the company recalled 2.17 million more vehicles to fix their floor mats.

Toyota said sales of its hybrids rose 50 percent as gas prices weighed on buyers' minds. Camry and Corolla sedan sales also jumped more than 50 percent.
