Mini To Add Crossover Vehicle

The small, two-door crossover will be based on the Paceman concept that Mini debuted Monday at the Detroit auto show.

DETROIT (AP) -- Mini says it's adding a new kind of vehicle to its lineup: A small, two-door crossover.

The crossover will be based on the Paceman concept that Mini debuted Monday at the Detroit auto show. The Paceman has the same bulbous hood as the four-door Countryman crossover, but it tapers off in back.

The vehicle will be the seventh in Mini's lineup. It's set to go on sale in 2012.

BMW sales chief Ian Robertson said last year was the most successful year in Mini's history, with worldwide sales up 8 percent to 234,000.

U.S. Mini sales were flat, but the company expects to get a boost from the Countryman, which goes on sale in the U.S. this month.
