General Dynamics Corp. has received a $27.1 million contract from the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command for services associated with the design and construction of a destroyer, the Defense Department said Wednesday.

The contract calls for General Dynamic's Bath Iron Works, in Bath, Maine, to provide technical and industrial engineering services for construction and maintenance on the design of the DDG 1000 Zumwalt class destroyer.

The work is expected to be completed by December.

Shares in General Dynamics added 65 cents to $63.64 on Wednesday.
