Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding is getting a $62 million from the Navy to buy long lead-time materials that will be used to build a 11th LPD 17-class amphibious transport dock ship.

The money would be used to buy items such as engines and diesel generators, electrical switchboards, deck equipment and fire extinguishing systems.

USS San Antonio-class ships are built to deploy the combat and support elements of Marine Expeditionary Units and Brigades. The ships are 684 feet long and can carry up to 800 troops.

Northrop Grumman has two of the ships under construction in Pascagoula and two others in Avondale, La.
