Northeastern University has received a $12 million gift from an alum to build a secure, state-of-the-art homeland security research facility.
The university announced Thurday the gift from George Kostas to build the new facility on the university's Burlington campus.
University officials say the gift is the largest for a capital project in Northeastern's history.
The son of Greek immigrants, Kostas graduated from Northeastern University with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1943.
The university says the new multi-story George J. Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security will be designed to U.S. Defense Department standards and will give Northeastern clearances to conduct secure research in a restricted environment.
