A unit of defense contractor General Dynamics Corp. has won a $30 million contract from the U.S. Army to build and support devices that detect biological and chemical weapons, the company said Friday.
General Dynamics' Armament and Technical Product unit awarded the six-year contract, which the company says has a value of up to $300 million if all the options are exercised. The number of devices in the contract and delivery dates are indefinite.
The unit has delivered more than 700 such detectors since 2001, General Dynamics said.
Work on the detectors will begin in April at a facility in Charlotte, N.C., that now employs 120 people.
Shares of the Falls Church, Va.-based General Dynamics rose $1.07, or 1.8 percent, to $60.89 in afternoon trading.
