MM: Leap Motion Wants To Augment Our World

Leap Motion has unveiled a headset called Project North Star that promises to blend the real and digital worlds, giving users a new level of control over their augmented reality.

Leap Motion is one of several companies working on augmented reality technology like gloves that let you “touch” virtual reality objects. Now they’ve unveiled a headset called Project North Star that promises to blend the real and digital worlds, giving users a new level of control over their augmented reality.

While this isn’t something available for purchase, it is a blueprint for what the company hopes will take off by offering it as an open source technology that other manufacturers can build on top of. The device includes two 3.5-inch LCD displays and a field view of 95 degrees high and 70 degrees wide. Sensors track hand motions across a full 180 degrees.

Leap Motion claims the whole device can be built for less than $100—but final working headsets will most likely cost more and require a separate computer to power the device. The company is still working on the prototype design before releasing the blueprint, but this might be a look at what’s coming soon.
