MM: This Inflatable Vest Is The Latest In Fall Protection Safety

In this week's episode of Manufacturing Minute, Italian manufacturing company Dainese reveals the aptly named Safety Jacket which is made with a technology already used in many of their motorcycle or ski jackets, and it’s designed to protect workers from high-impact falls.

Italian manufacturing company Dainese is known most for their protective clothing gear designed for those who enjoy motorcycling, mountain biking and winter sports.

But now, the company is venturing slightly outside of their core customer market and developing the aptly named Safety Jacket. The Safety Jacket is made with a technology already used in many of their motorcycle or ski jackets, and it’s designed to protect workers from high-impact falls.

The manufacturer says the jacket is made up of both electronic and pneumatic parts. The electronic system features three accelerometers and three gyroscopes that sends data continuously to a computer brain that runs an algorithm looking for fall conditions. Then, if the vest’s wearer starts to fall, the pneumatic part of the system will inflate airbags that are strategically placed around the worker’s body to maximize protection from trauma. Dainese also notes that the Safety Jacket can protect the worker from pendulum-effect impacts for those wearing harnesses above a height of two meters.

Currently the Safety Jacket is undergoing real-world product testing at power plants and station.
