Manufacturing Minute: Volvoโ€™s Gutsy Move Toward An Electric Future

In this episode, Volvoโ€™s bold new step could bring electric vehicles into the mainstream.

Volvoโ€™s bold new step could bring electric vehicles into the mainstream. This is your Manufacturing Minute.

Last week, the automaker announced that they will introduce a plug-in hybrid version of every model Volvo sells within the next four years. According to Volvo, this move is expected to account for 10 percent of its auto sales by 2020.

Volvoโ€™s President and CEO said, โ€œWe believe that the time has come for electrified cars to cease being a niche technology and enter the mainstream.โ€

Industry experts speculate the Swedish automaker is seeking to distinguish itself from its fellow European competitors, while also demonstrating a commitment to meet stricter carbon emissions standards in the U.S., Europe and China.

Volvoโ€™s announcement comes in the wake of the VW scandal in which automaker admitted they deliberately skirted regulations on diesel emissions.

So, What Do You Think?

Should other automakers consider investing in an all-electric or hybrid option? Or would it be more advantageous to make a full line of electric vehicles like Prius?
