In this episode, a car that travels faster than the speed of sound. Welcome to your Manufacturing Minute.

The Bloodhound SSC is a supersonic car that will hit 1,000 miles per hour in 55 seconds, according to the team behind it. But first it has to break the current world land-speed record.

The UK-based Bloodhound team hopes to break the current 763 miles-per-hour record by going 800 mph. The attempt will begin early next year in a test run in South Africa.

The car design is a mix of automotive and aircraft technology. It’s about 44 feet long and weighs just over 8 tons. The Bloodhound team calls it the “most complicated car ever built” with more than 3,500 parts and 22,500 rivets, many of which are unique to this car. The car will be powered by both a jet engine and a rocket, resulting in more than 135,000 horsepower.

SO, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Will this design be able to beat the current record? How will it change the future of automotive engineering?
