Oculus Founder Builds Fatal Feature into VR Headset

Game over, man.

Even the most real virtual reality still lacks the most dire of real-world consequences. Until now.

Palmer Luckey, founder of Oculus, has built a VR headset that kills the user if they die in a video game.

He was inspired by a fictional VR headset that used powerful microwaves to kill the person wearing it.

“I am a pretty smart guy, but I couldn’t come up with any way to make anything like this work, not without attaching the headset to gigantic pieces of equipment,” he wrote.

Instead, Luckey used explosive charges tied to a photosensor that picks up a specific frequency of the color red.

“When an appropriate game-over screen is displayed, the charges fire, instantly destroying the brain of the user,” he wrote.

Luckey said he has yet to try the headset and that it mostly functions as a “piece of office art.”
