Manufacturer Cited for Fatal Electrocution

A maintenance worker was killed while replacing a light fixture earlier this year.

An Alabama manufacturer of kitchen and bath cabinets faces more than $115,000 in penalties over a deadly electrocution earlier this year.

A 33-year-old maintenance technician employed by Wellborn Cabinets was killed March 16 while replacing a light fixture in a paint booth.

Federal workplace safety officials alleged that the company failed to verify that circuits were de-energized before changing the fixture.

Investigators also said Wellborn failed to use isolating devices for hazardous energy and violated rules regarding eye protection and ladders.

The company faces eight serious violations over the energized components.

Wellborn, based in Ashland, Alabama, employs approximately 1,200 people.

The company has 15 business days after receiving the allegations to comply, contest the findings, or request a conference with local OSHA officials.
