Loon and Wing are taking flight.
The Alphabet startups are graduating from X, Alphabet's secretive "moonshot factory," to join the company's Other Bets division as independent businesses.
Loon will work with mobile network operators globally to bring Internet access to unconnected and under-connected people around the globe, according to X.
Wing is building a drone delivery system to improve the speed, cost, and environmental impact of transporting goods, along with an unmanned-traffic management platform to safely route drones through the sky.
Leading the new units will be Alastair Westgarth, the new CEO of Loon, and James Ryan Burgess, the new CEO of Wing, who will work in partnership with Adam Woodworth, Wing’s CTO.
By graduating, they are considered full-fledged businesses apart from the company's big moneymaker, Google.
The new businesses now join the ranks of X graduates Waymo, a self-driving car company; cybersecurity company Chronicle; health data firm Verily; and Dandelion, a geothermal energy firm.
X reportedly plans to focus its attention to developing new "moonshot" projects and continuing its work in robotics, free-space optical communications, energy kites, and smart glasses.
