Edamame Recalled In 33 States Over Listeria Concerns

To date, no illnesses have been reported.

The popular Japanese snack item has been recalled in 33 states due to fears that it might be contaminated with listeria.

According to a release from the Food and Drug Administration, Advanced Fresh Concepts issued the voluntary recall after random quality testing found the product could potentially be contaminated.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections with symptoms ranging from fevers to muscle aches and convulsion; listeria primarily affects those with weakened immune systems, including pregnant mothers, infants and the elderly.

The recall affects packages dated between 01/03/2017 and 03/17/2017 with the UPC code 0-23012-00261-9 identified as “Edamame – Soybeans in Pods.

The packed edamame was sold at designated retail sushi counters within grocery stores, cafeterias and corporate dining centers in the following states: AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, ME, MI, MN, MS, NC, NH, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA and WY.

Because AFC notified all retailers about the recall, the product should no longer be available for purchase. Concerned consumers should not consume the product and return it for a full purchase.

To date, no illnesses have been reported.
