KitKat Bars To Be Made With Sustainable Cocoa

KitKat already makes its products with cocoa certified as sustainable in some countries, but the latest announcement extends that policy worldwide.

​Nestlé announced this week that KitKat will become the first global chocolate brand to make its products entirely from sustainably sourced cocoa early next year.

“Sustainable cocoa sourcing helps safeguard the livelihoods of farming communities and delivers higher quality cocoa beans," Nestlé confectionery chief Sandra Martinez said in a statement. "This announcement will only strengthen consumer trust in KitKat as a responsible brand.”

KitKat already makes its products with cocoa certified as sustainable in some countries, but the latest announcement extends that policy worldwide.

Nestlé previously committed to source 150,000 tons of sustainable cocoa by 2017. An investigation conducted with the Fair Labor Association in West Africa in 2012 found numerous labor, health and safety violations.

The Hershey Company produces KitKats for the U.S. market, but the company included KitKat among four brands to be produced with sustainable cocoa by next year.
