Recalls Of The Week: Apps Aggregate Safety Data

New smartphone apps make it easier than ever to keep an eye on recent, relevant recall information.

Too many find themselves in recall limbo waiting for news on affected models or available parts. Three free smartphone apps can fix that problem by sending you pertinent recall updates.

In the U.S., unattended recalls plague one in six cars on the road. And with a record 64 million vehicles recalled last year, it can become dizzying to keep track of open recalls.

One of these apps, My CarFax, displays data on service history, scheduled maintenance, recall news and estimated repair costs for up to five vehicles.

Vehicle recalls arenโ€™t the only potential safety hazard to worry about, however. Every product you purchase from ice cream to car seats could face a recall in the future. Another app called Recalls compiles material from the FDA, EPA, USDA, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Consumer Product Safety Organization. The app can search by category or manufacturer, and it allows you to share important recalls on social media. A similar app, RecallWatch, also includes medical and pet health recall information.

Maybe one of these helpful apps can keep you up-to-date and reduce your time in the recall waiting room.
