Dow Chemical Company has signed a long-term agreement with a wind farm under development in south Texas. The farm, which will power Dow’s Freeport Texas Manufacturing plant, will span 35,000 acres and produce enough electricity to power more than 55,000 homes. The farm is being developed by Bordas Wind Energy, a joint venture between MAP and Enerverse.
According to a press release, Dow said the move is in line with its “Sustainability Goal” commitments, and will help the company reduce its carbon footprint.
“Dow is always looking for win-win solutions — good for the environment and good for business,” said Jim Fitterling, vice chairman of business operations at Dow.
In terms of sales, Dow is the biggest chemical company in the U.S. and employs about 53,000 people. In 2014, its sales reached more than $58 billion. This recent move will make it the first company in the U.S. to power a manufacturing plant with renewable energy on such a grand scale.
The farm is planned for completion in 2016.
