Motorola Mobility Opens Chicago Headquarters

Smartphone maker Motorola Mobility has moved its headquarters and 2,000 employees to Chicago's Merchandise Mart.

CHICAGO (AP) -- Smartphone maker Motorola Mobility has moved its headquarters and 2,000 employees to Chicago's Merchandise Mart.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel attended an unveiling Tuesday at the company's new headquarters. Motorola Mobility was found in Chicago more than 80 years ago and moves back to the city after 38 years in Libertyville.

Motorola Mobility LLC President Rick Osterloh calls the Chicago offices a "special homecoming." The company announced the move in July 2012. At the time, Emanuel's office said Chicago didn't provide the company any financial incentives to move, but that a 2011 deal in which Illinois agreed to provide about $110 million in tax credits to stay in the state remained in place.

The mayor's office said in 2012 that Motorola Mobility was investing $300 million to move to Chicago.
