California Wants 3 Toxic Chemicals Out Of Products

The California Department of Toxic Substances is not banning the substances, but its manufacturers have until roughly the end of 2016 to find safer alternatives.

California health officials have named three toxic chemicals that they are hoping can be removed from certain consumer products by 2017.

The California Department of Toxic Substances announced Thursday in a statement that there are potentially three dangerous substances that it wants manufacturers to take out of certain products: chlorinated tris, a flame retardant and possible carcinogen that the agency wants removed from children's foam pad sleeping products; unreacted diisocyanates, an asthma causer and carcinogen that it wants removed from building insulation foam; and methylene chloride, a nerve toxin and carcinogen that it wants removed from paint strippers.

The agency is not banning the substances, but its manufacturers have until roughly the end of 2016 to find safer alternatives.

If they cannot, the agency could possibly make manufacturers attach warning labels or ban the products outright.
