Honda Recalls Over 40,000 Motorcycles

Honda will recall 40,672 units of two motorcycle models commonly used for mail delivery in Japan over concerns about potential brake malfunction.

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Honda Motor Co. said Thursday it will recall a total of 40,672 units of two motorcycle models commonly used for mail delivery in Japan over concerns about potential brake malfunction.

In a report filed with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Honda said the two models subject to the recall are 110MD and 50MD Super Cub motorcycles manufactured between September 2009 and September 2012.

The recall followed reports of malfunctions in brake parts meant for use in cold weather and covers all motorcycles in which the parts may have been installed.

According to the ministry, the motorcycles' brake cables may detach from their brake pedals, leading to failure of the front wheel brake.

Honda's joint venture in China, Sundiro Honda Motorcycle Co., Ltd. also issued a recall for a total of 8,144 units of the same models manufactured between May and August 2013.
