MSHA Issues 135 Citations At Mines In December

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration says it also issued 24 orders following inspections at 11 coal mines and two other mines. MSHA issued seven orders and six citations at Hanover Resources LLC's Caymus Mine in Boone County.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Federal mining regulators issued 135 citations during December impact inspections.

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration says it also issued 24 orders following inspections at 11 coal mines and two other mines.

MSHA issued seven orders and six citations at Hanover Resources LLC's Caymus Mine in Boone County.

The mine operator was cited for failing to follow approved plans created to reduce conditions that would expose miners to the risk of black lung and mine explosions.

Other mines in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Texas, Nevada and California also received citations.

The inspections began in 2010 after a mine explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia that killed 29 coal miners.

Since then MSHA has conducted 700 inspections and issued 11,562 citations and 1,076 orders.
