Jury Says Google, Others Infringed On Patents

Ringtone company Vringo Inc. has won a patent lawsuit against Google and several other companies. The lawsuit claimed that Google, AOL, IAC/InterActiveCorp and others violate two patents related to Internet search filtering technology used to place the best ads in the best positions on websites.

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Ringtone company Vringo Inc. has won a patent lawsuit against Google and several other companies.

A federal jury in Norfolk awarded a total $30 million in damages to Vringo subsidiary I/P Engine Inc. The defendants also must pay I/P Engine future royalties until the patents expire in 2016.

The lawsuit claimed that Google, AOL, IAC/InterActiveCorp and others violate two patents related to Internet search filtering technology used to place the best ads in the best positions on websites.

Vringo announced the jury's Tuesday decision in a news release.

Vringo says the damages include $15.9 million from Google, $7.9 million from AOL, $6.6 million from IAC Search & Media, $98,800 from Target Corp. and $4,000 from Gannett Co.

Google says it expects to prevail in either post-trial motions or on appeal.
