A manufacturing initiative recently announced plans to solicit data analytics and machine intelligence projects from companies and universities.

The first 2016 project call from the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute included an effort to collect data from complex products' life cycles in order to reduce their overall costs and improve decisions.

A second proposal, meanwhile, asks for affordable methods to retrofit production systems for the Industrial Internet of Things by equipping them with sensors and quickly and securely storing and transmitting collected data.

DMDII — the first manufacturing lab convened by UI LABS — will host a workshop on the project call at its Chicago Innovation Center next week. The institute asks businesses and institutions to outline their interests in advance of the meeting via an online survey.

Subsequent DMDII projects later this year will include low-cost robotics, real-time factory optimization, seamless work flows and human systems integration.
