Food Manufacturing's Recall Recap: Rats Spoil Grocer Supplier's Entire Production

Here's the food recall and health alerts issued from the FDA, USDA and CDC over this past week.

This past week was a pretty quiet one on the food recall front, but news of one in Canada was particularly interesting, and more so disturbing.

On January 14th, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based Bistak, which makes a wide range of food grocery staples, recalled its entire portfolio of products made through December 29th, for risk of Salmonella.

The cause? Rats.

The company said a rat infestation may have contaminated its products that include grains, beans, flour, grocery canned goods, fats and oils, drinks, meat products, fish, baked goods, spices and milk powder.

They were sold to grocers in Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba, Saskatchewan and may have been distributed in other provinces and territories.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority advises consumers to discard or return all impacted products.

Besides the rats, here’s the other food recalls we covered on foodmanufacturing.com over the past week:

Listeria in Frozen Spinach

Frozen Food Development (Rheem, PA) has recalled specific lots of Lidl-branded 12 oz. packages of Frozen Chopped Spinach because it could be contaminated with Listeria. It was distributed in Lidl retail stores in GA, SC, NC, VA, MD, DE, NY, NJ and PA.

Undeclared Milk in Vegan Mac & Cheese

Amy’s Kitchen (Petulama, CA) has recalled one lot of its Vegan Organic Rice Mac & Cheeze due to the potential of having trace amounts of undeclared milk. In total, 15,626 cases were recalled.

Undeclared Soy in Baking Chips

Lily’s Sweets (Boulder, CO) has recalled 18,855 cases of 7-oz. Peppermint Flavor Baking Chips due to the presence of undeclared soy lecithin. The product was a limited holiday seasonal offering available exclusively at U.S. Walmart stores.
