VW, BMW on Opposite Ends of 2021 Sales

One had its lowest sales in a decade, the other hit record deliveries.

Volkswagen disclosed it experienced its lowest sales figures in a decade at 8.9 million deliveries in 2021, according to Reuters

The German automaker also said it expects unpredictable supply chain conditions in the first half of 2022. 

Volkswagen’s brand dropped 8.1% in sales to slightly under 4.9 million units. 

The biggest sales drop equaled 14.8% in China, but the battery-electric vehicle sales quadrupled. 

Battery-electric vehicles accounted for 5.1% of Volkswagen’s deliveries which doubled last year’s figure. 

On the other end of the spectrum, BMW’s deliveries reached a record 2.21 million vehicles from its brand. 

Simultaneously, BMW passed Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz sales to claim the title of premium carmaker with the most vehicles sold worldwide for the first time in five years. 

Volkswagen posted 13% growth in North America while Mercedes-Benz and BMW saw .4% and 19.5% growth in the U.S., respectively.
