Organs Discovered at Detroit Wastewater Plant

Workers at the plant have found four since mid-December.

Welcome back, IEN NOW viewers.

I bet you thought we’d ease you back in to the New Year with some kind of heartwarming tale of industrial plant operations done right. Well, this one isn’t exactly heartwarming, but it is about hearts. And possibly kidneys? We’re not sure.

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that workers at Great Lakes Water Authority – a city wastewater treatment plant – found several items in the week leading up to Christmas that they suspect are organs. No one has yet confirmed whether these belong to humans or animals, but the tissue has been sent to a medical examiner who is currently investigating.

Local news station Fox 2 says that the first two discoveries are thought to be kidneys, but the third – uncovered several days later – is yet to be determined.

But that’s not the end of it. On December 28th, a FOURTH organ was actually found but it was quickly revealed to be a deer heart, according to Michigan’s MLive.com. Could the rest be too? We’re not sure yet, but before you exhale in relief and tell yourself that this is all some deer butchering gone wrong, MLive wants to remind you of a 13-month period in 2012 and 2013, where there were several discoveries in the Macomb county Michigan sewer system of body parts, including “hunks of human flesh” – the sources of which were never determined.

I’m Anna Wells and this is IEN Now.
