Additive manfuacturing is an industrial form of 3D printing that can produce large, complicated designs with only a fraction of the waste as seen in the typical machining process. Proponents of this technology say it's the future of manfuacturing, where companies will be able to develop new parts on-the-fly and bring a whole new level of complexity to the parts they produce. What used to be a handful of processes could be intregrated into one additive manufacturing process. The material isn't cheap — right now, a titanium powder is about $150 a pound — but the quality of the final product is often enough to outweigh an additional cost.
