The recently-developed "Cheetah" robot, built by DARPA, has set a new land speed record for legged robots, galloping at speeds up to 18 miles per hour. The robot's design is based on its namesake, and other speedy animals found in nature, and extends it stride by flexing and un-flexing its back on each step, much like an actual cheetah does. DARPA says the research isn't for a particular purpose, but may be used by the military some time in the future. One certainly could see dozens of applications, such as robots that can quickly haul ammunition or medical supplies to soldiers on the battlefield.
