Cybercrime expert Mikko Hypponen talks through three types of online attacks on privacy and data — and only two are considered crimes. First, of course, are the financially-motivated hackers, who steal credit cards and dump the cash in Swiss banks. The second are so-called "hacktivists," groups like Anonymous, who are more interested in spreading a message or protesting a figure or business they dislike. The third — the "legal" one — are hacks conducted by governments.
And don't think that digital hacking doesn't have real-world consequences. Hypponen says that when nation states get involved, it costs lives.
