Tranzyme Board To Explore Sale, Other Alternatives

The Durham, N.C., company said Friday it has not decided on any specific alternative, and it has no time frame for completing its review. Tranzyme has no drugs on the market. It said in December it would end a mid-stage study of a treatment for diabetic gastroparesis because it failed to do better than a placebo.

PwC: 2012 Manufacturing M&A Surpassed 2011

Despite the reduction in merger and acquisition (M&A) activity during the last quarter, 2012 proved to be a favorable year for deal making in the industrial manufacturing space. Year over year, the total number of transactions decreased slightly from 2011 but the value of those deals increased substantially.

A lawsuit challenging plans to take troubled personal computer maker Dell Inc. private is being filed in Delaware. The lawsuit filed Wednesday claims that company founder Michael Dell and a group led by investment firm Silver Lake are trying to buy the Round Rock, Texas-based computer maker on the cheap for $24.4 billion, or $13.65 per share.

Reliance Buying Metals USA For About $766.1M

Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. is buying Metals USA Holdings Corp. for about $766.1 million. Reliance said Wednesday that it will pay $20.65 per Metals USA share. That's a 13 percent premium to Tuesday's closing price of $18.30. The companies put the deal's total value at around $1.2 billion.

Dell Reportedly Near Buyout Deal Worth Up To $24B

Shares of Dell are climbing in premarket trading Tuesday on reports the personal computer maker is nearing a deal to go private worth between $23 billion and $24 billion. The transaction is said to involve a group including Microsoft Corp., private equity firm Silver Lake and CEO and company founder Michael Dell.

Oracle Buying Acme Packet For About $2.1B

Oracle will buy Acme Packet Inc., which makes equipment for telecommunications companies, for about $2.1 billion. Acme's gear is used by more than 1,900 service providers and enterprises around the world. Carlyle Closes $4.9B Deal For DuPont Unit

The fate of Twinkies and other Hostess cakes are still being negotiated with other bidders. The "stalking horse" bid by McKee would set the floor for an auction process that lets competitors make better offers.

Belkin To Buy Linksys Router Maker

Belkin, a maker of smartphone cases and computing accessories, said Thursday that it is buying the home networking business unit of Cisco, including the Linksys router brand. Privately held Belkin, based in Playa Vista, Calif., did not disclose the purchase price, nor did Cisco Systems Inc. The deal is expected to close in March.

Specialty drugmaker Allergan is buying migraine headache drug developer MAP Pharmaceuticals Inc. for about $882.5 million as it looks to expand its migraine treatments. Medical device maker Stryker is buying orthopaedic products maker Trauson Holdings Co. for $764 million in order to expand its business in China. Trauson's biggest shareholder, Luna Group, has agreed to tender 61.7 percent of the Trauson shares toward the offer, Stryker said. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the second quarter.
