1 Injured In Jersey Chemical Plant Blast

A small explosion at a chemical plant in southern New Jersey forced the evacuation of employees and left one person injured.

WEST DEPTFORD, N.J. (AP) -- A small explosion at a chemical plant in southern New Jersey forced the evacuation of employees and left one person injured.

It happened at the Johnson Matthey plant in West Deptford just after 5:30 a.m. Friday.

Plant general manager Robert Bullen-Smith says a process line in a chemical production area broke and a spill occurred. He would not identify the chemical.

Bullen-Smith says there were no major injuries. But he says three employees in the immediate area were examined and one was sent to the hospital for most tests.

Bullen-Smith says the damage was contained to one area of the plant and the company can resume operations.

The plant manager says there was no danger to the surrounding area.

The chemical and precious metals company is headquartered in London.
