Academics emphasized the necessity of collaboration between government, private sector and standards bodies in compiling the Internet of Things (IoT) through technical solutions and regulations, while preserving security and privacy, at a recent workshop.
The IoT is a framework for cataloging each unique physical object and their virtual representations in an Internet-like structure. The International Telecommunication Union held a workshop, “Internet of Things: Trends and challenges in standardization,” held at its headquarters in Geneva on February 18. A multi-disciplinary group of experts discussed development of the IoT.
Keynote speaker Daniel Faulk of SAP  discussed the economic and social drivers of the IoT in healthcare, sustainability, quality of life and remote management. Faulk focused investment in new IoT technologies and the ensuing business development. Representatives of various standards bodies shared their IoT projects. The open-source community’s contribution to the development of those standards was also a focus.
The workshop featured exhibits from industry, government, research institutes and academia. STMicroelectronics  showcased its Smart Home concept. The European OpenIoT  project was presented by the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL ). Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications (NICT ) displayed its medical body area network. SAP showed videos highlighting the organization’s work in the field. OrbiWise  displayed its IoT platform, and there was also an exhibit from Yokosuka Telecom Research Park (YRP ).
