Honda To Recall 80,000 Hybrid Cars Over Transmission Glitch

According to Honda, there is a risk that the new dual clutch transmission system adopted in the two vehicles to improve fuel efficiency may prevent gear engagement or cause their sudden engagement, resulting in standstills or sudden starts.

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Honda Motor Co. said Monday it will recall a total of 81,353 units of its Fit and Vezel hybrid cars due to a transmission software problem that could prevent smooth starting.

In a report filed with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Honda said it is recalling the two vehicles manufactured from July 2013 to February 2014.

According to Honda, there is a risk that the new dual clutch transmission system adopted in the two vehicles to improve fuel efficiency may prevent gear engagement or cause their sudden engagement, resulting in standstills or sudden starts.

Since Dec. 21 last year, a total of 356 cases of trouble have been reported, including one which left a car stalled on a railway crossing in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan.

Honda recalled the Fit in October and December last year over separate transmission problems. The Vezel was launched last December.
