DETROIT (AP) -- Auto parts supplier Denso Corp. plans to invest nearly $1 billion in North America over the next four years and add more than 2,000 jobs as it works to localize its operations.

The investment from the Japanese company was announced Tuesday during press previews for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It will increase research and development, expand current production and add new capacity.

Denso says more than $750 million of the investment and more than 1,200 jobs will be in the U.S. The company says it is looking at investing at locations in Michigan, Tennessee, Iowa, California and North Carolina, and it plans a new assembly and warehouse facility.

The company says a plant in Maryville, Tenn., also will make equipment used by Denso in manufacturing.
