Toronto, Ontario — One-of-a-kind industry event Medical Manufacturing Innovations (MMI Toronto) 2012, which takes place October 24-25 at the International Centre, Hall 6, in Mississauga, has unveiled a dynamic and engaging conference line-up.

Building New Lungs: Biologics and Biomechanic Devices is the title of the opening presentation by keynote speaker Dr. Shaf Keshavjee. Dr. Keshavjee is the renowned thoracic surgeon and director of the Toronto Lung Transplant Program who made headlines after leading the team that performed a successful double lung transplant on patient Hélène Campbell earlier this year.

"Being a part of this event is important for me as a surgeon," said Dr. Keshavjee, whose presentation takes place on October 24 and is free to all those who pre-register for the event. "It's a perfect opportunity to speak directly to medical manufacturers and tell them how the devices they produce help to save lives and why working together is important to innovate and improve processes."

Hot conference topics

Other high-demand conference sessions, called Discovery Tracks, will cover hot topics including metal injection molding, additive manufacturing applications, and advanced multi-material molding processes to help provide solutions and pertinent education to the industry.

The thought-provoking and informative educational line-up was developed based on feedback from thousands of industry representatives through a survey conducted by show organizer Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).

"With a bourgeoning $7.7 billion Canadian market in medical and dental device manufacturing, it's important to address the key concerns expressed by the industry through a unique event like MMI Toronto," said Janine Saperson, MMI Toronto Event Manager, explaining that the medical and dental device manufacturing industry has unique challenges, which is the reason this niche event is being held. "At MMI Toronto 2012, we bring together users and sellers of medical and dental device manufacturing in this one-of-a-kind opportunity to obtain knowledge and leading-edge solutions necessary to help their growth objectives and support emerging technologies and innovations in this highly-valued industry."

New Business Support

In an effort to help medical device manufacturers gain new business, MMI Toronto will host special guest David Hood, a former advisor to the U.S. Army and current president of DH3 and Associates, who will provide attendees with an inside look on how to best approach doing business with the U.S. government and military clients.

According to Hood, government organizations are highly conducive environments for medical innovation and opportunities, specifically in areas such as infectious disease control, combat casualty care or regenerative medicine to help with vision restoration, pain management and prosthetics.

To complement Hood's compelling proposition on procurement processes for government, representatives from MedMira Inc., a Canadian developer and marketer of rapid diagnostic technology based in Halifax, will describe how they recently secured two major U.S. government contracts valued at US$4.2 million and US$2 million respectively.
