Louisville Plant Hit With Record Air Violation

Environmental officials say Eckart America has agreed to pay a record $668,000 fine over air quality violations.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Louisville environmental officials say a pigment-manufacturing plant in the city's Rubbertown district will pay a record $668,000 fine over air quality violations.

The city Air Pollution Control District said Wednesday that Eckart America has agreed to pay the fine plus an unspecified amount to be determined. That figure will take into account how much money the company saved by not complying with air quality regulations according to The Courier-Journal (http://bit.ly/pkQUcv ).

Officials say the fines are not related to a May aluminum dust explosion that injured two workers at the plant. In the air quality issue, regulators say there were a number of issues, including the company failing to conduct mechanical integrity inspections and visual emission surveys, dating to 2006/

Eckart America President Tony Ameo said in the company takes responsibility for the violations.
