Trump Budget Proposal Would Slash Funding To Prominent Manufacturing Programs

On Tuesday, the White House released the proposed budget for 2018, in which the funding for a number of notable manufacturing programs be slashed or eliminated entirely.

The most prominent of President Trump's cuts to manufacturing was the recommendation that the $124 million outlay for Manufacturing Extension Partnerships be completely defunded.

According to its website, the MEP is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and works with manufacturers on the national, state and local levels to enhance the manufacturing community by "contributing to the growth of well-paying jobs, dynamic manufacturing communities, and American innovation and global competitiveness."

Another prominent slash in funding would hit Manufacturing USA, a national network of nine manufacturing institutes designed to boost the sharing of technology and workforce challenges to build a more robust R&D infrastructure. With the current proposed budget, this network would see its budget cut by 70 percent to $15 million.

A final notable cut includes a decrease by 39 percent to funding for the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act — a service that provides employment and training services to dislocated workers, adults and youth.
