Amazon is reportedly on the lookout for more than 1,000 small, urban warehouses across Europe as it seeks to bolster its rapid delivery capabilities on the continent.

The Telegraph reports that the e-commerce giant plans to establish about 1,300 new distribution facilities near major cities. The spaces would function as "last-mile" centers that receive and store shipments prior to their final deliveries to nearby customers.

The paper noted that many similar warehouses are currently operated by Amazon's parcel partners, but the e-retailer long aimed to increasingly control its own shipping operations.

A recent report suggested that Amazon helped fuel record-high warehouse leases and property investment in Europe last year. The company accounted for nearly one-fourth of all leased warehouse space in the U.K. alone last year, according to property broker Savills.
