Photos Of The Day: New Images Reveal Tesla Gigafactory Nearing Completion

Construction of the Gigafactory's approximately 4.9 million square feet of operational space seems to be progressing nicely.

New aerial shots released this week by a survey and mapping company NM Group show that Tesla's Gigafactory seems to be on schedule for completion.

NM Group says they were recently mapping the area near the Sparks, Nevada, site when they snapped photos of a bulked-up Gigafactory. As of January 2017, construction of the Gigafactory's approximately 4.9 million square feet of operational space wasn't close to being even 50 percent complete.

As a reminder, battery cell production began at Tesla's behemoth plant at the start of 2017.

Initially, the Gigafactory will churn out cells for Tesla's stationary energy storage products (the Powerwall 2 and Powerpack 3), while production of the Model 3 cells is scheduled to begin later this year.

According to Bloomberg, some 6,500 people will work at the Gigafactory full-time by 2018.

Also, by 2020, the plant is projected to reach full production with 150 GWh of battery pack output — a key in founder and CEO Elon Musk's plan to transition the world to more sustainable energy usage.
