Report: Tesla Could Allow Car Owners To Make Repairs Themselves

Tesla could soon enable more owners of its electric vehicles to make repairs in the comfort of their own garages.

Tesla could soon enable more owners of its electric vehicles to make repairs in the comfort of their own garages.

Electrek reports that company president John McNeill recently informed the Tesla Motors Club forum that a process to sell replacement parts and release service and software information was "in the works."

Tesla sells its vehicles directly to customers, thereby bypassing conventional auto dealerships, and requires company approval and substantial fees for body shops to access repair details.

As a result, drivers could have to travel hundreds of miles for Tesla mechanics to make repairs.

In Massachusetts, however, Electrek noted that state law requires vehicle manufacturers to disclose repair information to consumers and independent shops.

And if Tesla does not expand its repair information, as McNeill suggested, lawmakers in other states could force the issue. The report said that Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska and New York are considering similar “Right to Repair” bills.
