UPS plans to cut 160 jobs at its freight facility in Richmond, Va., over the next year.

The parcel delivery giant said in a statement that "streamlining support positions" will help reduce costs and improve operations.

Eighty layoffs will take place in the current quarter, with the remainder implemented during the next 12-month window; the positions will be realigned at other UPS facilities.

UPS Freight's headquarters will remain in Richmond.

A company spokesman also told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that affected employees will have the opportunity to apply for 45 current job openings at the Richmond location.

UPS is currently in the process of automating its largest U.S. hubs. The company’s earnings increased in its latest quarterly financial report, but were hindered by currency exchange rates and fuel surcharge changes.
