This week Bloomberg reported that Walmart is being sued for defrauding customers by selling “100 percent” Parmesan cheese when, in fact, the Great Value brand grated cheese contained as much as 10 percent cellulose — the wood-based anti-clumping agent.
According to Eater, if the lawsuit against Walmart gets class-action approval, nationwide consumers would be entitled to whatever settlement Walmart might have to pay.
The lawsuit from customer Marc Moshetta comes in the wake of an earlier investigation from the Food and Drug Administration first reported by Bloomberg.
Currently, the FDA is in the middle of a criminal case against Pennsylvania-based Castle Cheese for “doctoring its 100 percent real Parmesan with cut-rate substitutes and such fillers as wood pulp and distributing it to some of the country’s biggest grocery chains” for 30 years.
