With constant news about ignition switches and exploding gas tanks, it’s nice to hear that BMW is taking a step toward accident avoidance. With more than 90 percent of auto-related crashes due to human blunders, BMW’s new “Active Assist” technology is trying to take these errors out of the equation.
The new technology uses laser sensors that will automatically brake before a vehicle hits any stationary object. Although collision-avoidance systems are not new, BMW’s system isn’t just focused on the car in front of you — the sensors keep track of walls, columns and other objects, which constantly remap the area. The company’s next step is a focus on moving objects to not only show where a cyclist or car is, but also where they will be.
