One half of the duo that created Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream is working to pass legislation in New York to require the labeling of foods with ingredients from genetically modified plants.

Jerry Greenfield spoke out in favor of GMO labeling Tuesday at a rally at the Capitol.

The legislation faces significant opposition from food producers and agricultural companies that say GMOs are safe and that labels will increase prices and needlessly frighten consumers. They successfully blocked the legislation last year.

Greenfield says food companies should be proud of what's in their product and shouldn't oppose efforts to inform consumers. Ben & Jerry's doesn't use GMO ingredients.

On Monday Chipotle became the first national fast-food chain to announce it had ended the use of genetically modified ingredients in its food.
