In honor of Earth Day this week, Kelley Blue Books issued its annual 10 Best Green Cars list.

American drivers are becoming more aware of their car’s carbon footprint and look for better-mileage vehicles or alternative fuel equivalents. Popularity in greener, alternative fuel vehicles has increased from 250,000 in 1995 to over 11 million as of 2011 according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

These vehicle numbers include over 2 million hybrid gas-electric and diesel-electric vehicles, while the majority of cars and trucks fall into the flexible fuel vehicles category. In comparison, the U.S. has over 250 million cars and trucks on the road, 99 percent of which operate on gasoline or diesel alone — the newer versions being more fuel efficient.

"The list of 'green' vehicle standouts continues to blossom, and with strict Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) requirements coming down the pipeline, auto manufacturers are making stronger advancements each year in creating more environmentally friendly vehicles," said Jack Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book, in a press statement.

For the seventh year in a row, here is Kelley Blue Book’s list of 10 Best Green Cars available for 2015:
