President Barack Obama says a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security would have a direct impact on state economies and the nation's security.

Obama is speaking Monday to the nation's governors, who are gathered at the White House for a meeting with the president and other officials. The meeting comes says before the DHS budget is set to run out over a dispute over Obama's immigration executive actions.

The president is telling the governors that if the DHS employees in their states don't get paid, they won't be able to spend money to help sustain local economies.

Obama also hosted the governors Sunday night for a black tie dinner at the White House.
