Operators of the Susquehanna nuclear power plant in central Pennsylvania say they have disconnected Unit One from the regional power grid after finding a small water leak inside the containment structure.
PPL officials said Saturday that the leak was "well within the plants limits for continued safe operation" but the unit was removed from the grid as a precaution to allow completion of repairs and assure reliability during high-demand winter months.
Officials said the concrete containment structure surrounds the reactor and isn't accessible when the unit is running. PPL said it expects to quickly find the source of the leak, complete repairs and resume electric generation.
The plant seven miles north of Berwick is owned by PPL Susquehanna LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by PPL Susquehanna.
